Submitting your web site to a directory

To develop popularity for your web site, you should submit your site to the most visited directories. If your site is listed with them, then crawler-based search engines are more likely to find your site your site and add it to their listings. Yahoo, Open Directory Project, Business.com and 01webdirectory.com are examples of such directories. Also, to further develop link popularity, you should consider sites/directories that are specific to your industry.

There are many important tips to follow when submitting your web site to a directory.

Verify Category
The category selection process would apply to any site, and the more specific the category you submit to, the more targeted your traffic will be. If your business is region specific you should always submit to a category dedicated to that region as this will help you get very targeted visitors.

It would be best idea to find your competitors listing and to be listed there. It might be tempting to be listed in some other category, but this category is likely your best fit.

Clear-cut Title
Present a title that accurately represents the site. Don't put your title and description in ALL CAPS, don't capitalize words like 'and', 'at', 'of', 'on' and the like.

Always do use your official business or website name or Create a businesslike and professional title and description using your important keywords and don't use an abundance of marketing hype and just list keyword after keyword in your title or description as if you do this the editor reviewing your submission may refuse your site.

Precise Description
Try to make your description clear, concise and a complete and natural sounding sentence which describes your website in an objective light. Limit your descriptions to a reasonable length, remember that directory editors edit for conciseness as well as clarity. Include your best keywords in the description, since searches will only find your site if the keyword is in the description. Don't just list keyword after keyword and use of marketing hype in the description.

Correct URL

Type the URL correctly and in the proper location, review the URL to make sure it loads properly.

Don't try to get listed twice by submitting the base URL http://www.yourcompany.com and the URL for the index page http://www. yourcompany/index.html. You will finally be caught and may lose both listings. Along the same lines, do not use re-directs or aliases which lead to the same site.

Hint: If your web site has been accepted into a directory, you can then submit specialized pages within your web site to other directory categories. Once your site has been added to a directory, you should not have to resubmit it unless your business has significantly changed and you belong in a different category.
